Is your TV remote control not working? Whether it’s unresponsive, sending weak signals, or failing to pair with your TV, there are several troubleshooting steps you can take before replacing it. At TVPartsToday, we’re here to help you diagnose and fix common remote control issues. Follow this guide to get your remote working again.

Step 1: Check the Batteries
The most common reason for a remote to stop working is battery-related issues. Ensure that:
-
The batteries have a good charge. Try using a fresh set of batteries.
-
The batteries are installed correctly. The negative (-) side should align with the spring, and the positive (+) side should align with the flat metal contact.
-
The battery compartment is clean and free of corrosion.
Step 2: Test the Infrared (IR) Signal
Most TV remotes use infrared signals to communicate with the TV. To check if your remote is transmitting a signal:
-
Open the camera app on your smartphone.
-
Point the remote’s IR emitter (a small bulb at the front) at your phone’s camera.
-
Press a button on the remote while looking at the screen.
-
If you see a pinkish or white light flashing from the emitter, the remote is sending a signal. If not, the remote may be faulty and need replacement.
Step 3: Ensure the Remote Is Paired with Your TV
Some remotes require pairing with a TV before they will function. If your remote has stopped working:
-
Check your TV manual or search online for pairing instructions specific to your TV model.
-
Follow the steps provided to re-establish the connection.
-
Some TVs have a reset option for the remote control in the settings menu.
Step 4: Verify the TV’s IR Sensor
If the remote is sending a signal but the TV isn’t responding:
-
Ensure there are no obstructions between the remote and the TV’s IR sensor.
-
Clean the sensor on the TV to remove dust or dirt.
-
Try using another remote (if available) to determine whether the issue is with the remote or the TV’s sensor.

Step 5: Check for Smart TV Remote Alternatives
If you have a Smart TV connected to Wi-Fi, you may be able to control it using a universal remote app on your smartphone. Be sure to:
-
Search for a compatible remote control app for your TV brand.
-
Connect both your phone and TV to the same Wi-Fi network.
-
Follow the app’s instructions to set up and pair your phone with the TV.
Step 6: Consider Replacing the IR Sensor or Remote
If none of the above steps resolve the issue, your TV’s IR sensor may be faulty. Depending on your TV model, the IR sensor could be:
-
A standalone part that can be replaced.
-
Integrated into the TV’s Wi-Fi board, requiring a full board replacement.
-
Built into the mainboard, requiring a full board replacement.
