So your TV won’t turn on. No picture, no sound – and worst of all, no red standby light? Don’t panic just yet! This common issue can be easier to troubleshoot than you think!
Let’s break down what might be going on – and how to safely diagnose and fix it.

🔌 Step 1: Check Your Power Source
Before digging inside your TV, rule out the basics:
-
✅ Try a different outlet: Plug in a lamp or phone charger to see if the outlet is working.
-
🔁 Try a different power cord: If it's detachable, use another compatible one.
-
🔌 Check your power strip or surge protector: Some surge protectors have built-in fuses or switches that trip.
TVpartsToday Tip:
👉 A tripped breaker or dead power strip is more common than you’d think. Test every link in the power chain before assuming the TV is the problem!
🔋 Step 2: Perform a Power Reset
Sometimes your TV just needs a hard reset! If you’re lucky, this will be the only step you need to take.
How to do it:
-
Unplug your TV from the wall.
-
Hold the TV’s physical power button (not the remote) for 30–60 seconds.
-
Let it sit unplugged for a few minutes.
-
Plug it back in and try powering on.
TVpartsToday Tip:
🛠 This resets internal capacitors and clears temporary glitches. It’s free, easy, and surprisingly effective.
🧠 Step 3: Examine the Power Supply Board
If the standby light is still out, it’s time to look inside the set. The power supply board is responsible for distributing electricity to the TV’s other components.
What to look for:
-
🔍 Blown capacitors: Bulging or leaking tops
-
🔥 Burn marks or unusual smells
-
🔌 Loose cables or cracked solder joints

🧪 Step 4: Check for Power Output
If you have a multimeter:
-
Look for voltage markings next to the power supply’s output pins (often labeled 12V, 5V, etc.).
-
Check whether the board is supplying any voltage when the TV is plugged in.
No voltage? Likely a bad power supply.
Voltage present? The problem may be deeper – possibly the main board.
TVpartsToday Tip:
🧰 Be cautious. Even unplugged, some components can hold a charge. If in doubt, call a pro.
🔧 Step 5: Disconnect the Main Board (Advanced)
A trick many pros use: disconnect the main board from the power board.
-
If the standby light suddenly appears or backlights flash, this means the main board is shorting out the system.
TVpartsToday Tip:
🧠 This trick is great for isolating the issue. If the power board works without the main board connected, guess what? A main board swap is your next move – and yes, we’ve got those too!
🧯 What Else Could It Be?
-
🧨 Blown fuse on power board – Replaceable with a like-rated fuse.
-
⚙️ Internal relay failure – Rare, but worth noting.
-
⚫ Damaged panel or shorted backlight strips – Less common, but can cause shutdowns at startup.
🛎 When to Call in Backup
DIY isn’t always the answer. If you’re not comfortable opening the TV or working with a multimeter, it’s okay to bring in a pro.
