DIY TV Repair: Sony Part Identification 101

DIY TV Repair: Sony Part Identification 101

DisclaimerThere are way too many variations to list every possible example. If, after using this guide you are still not sure what parts to order, please call in to the office or email us at info@tvpartstoday.com.

If you are working through a Sony TV repair and dealing with issues like a blank screen, no signal, or intermittent power, everything starts with identifying the correct replacement part. At TVpartsToday, known as The World's #1 Hub for DIY TV Repair, we have guided thousands of customers through Sony repairs, and one thing is always clear. Sony televisions require a more careful approach when it comes to part identification. The process is not always straightforward, but with the right knowledge, it becomes completely manageable.

If you have read our other blogs, or interacted with us at all, then you know what we say time and time again... "Always match the part number, not the board number!" Board numbers are used during manufacturing and are often shared across multiple variations of a board that are not compatible with one another. Relying on them can lead to ordering the wrong component, which creates unnecessary delays and added cost.

And while that is true for 99 out of 100 parts, Sony main boards are an exception to the rule! We get into that a bit more down below, but we wanted to give a heads up beforehand. With Sony main boards, the board number is what we are going to use. If you're confused, just keep reading, we have you covered!

PLEASE NOTEIn the following pictures, the manufacturer's part number is circled in GREEN and is the number you need to match to your part to ensure you get the correct part. The numbers marked with a RED "X" are board numbers used in the manufacturing process and matching these numbers will not guarantee a compatible part. We have not put a red "X" on all board numbers present on the parts pictured.

Understanding Sony Power Supply Boards

The power supply board is responsible for distributing voltage throughout your television, making it one of the most critical components inside the set. When this board begins to fail, symptoms often include no power, random shutdowns, flickering standby lights, or a TV that attempts to start but never fully turns on.

Sony power supply boards are typically the easiest to identify compared to other Sony components. You will usually find the correct part number on a barcode or QR code label attached to the board. These numbers often appear as a solid nine digit sequence beginning with the number one. In some cases, the same number may also appear in a dashed format printed directly on the board itself.

An example of a Sony power supply part number would be:  1-001-390-11 or 100139011.
Below is a picture of a Sony power supply board:

It is common to see multiple numbers on the power board, which can create confusion. The safest approach is to focus on the barcode label and treat that number as your primary reference. If there is any uncertainty, verifying the number before ordering is always the smarter move. Remember, you can always email us at info@tvpartstoday.com!

Navigating Sony Main Board Identification

Sony main boards are where things become more complex. As we mentioned at the beginning of the article, unlike many other manufacturers, Sony often does not print the true part number directly on the board. Instead, you will find a "reference number" (a board number, but we hate to call it that!) on a white sticker, and this is the key to identifying the correct replacement.

These reference numbers typically follow a format that includes a combination of letters and numbers, sometimes with dashes and sometimes without. While this number may not look like a traditional part number, it serves as the bridge to finding the correct component.

An example of a Sony main board part number would be: A-2170-502-A (or A2170502A).
The reference number you would see on your part is actually A-2170-473-A (A2170473A).

This is where having access to a cross reference system becomes essential. By using the number from the sticker, you can trace it back to the exact part required for your specific model and panel configuration. Without this step, it becomes very easy to order a board that appears identical but does not function correctly in your TV. Need help? Give us a call: 930-212-1975

Identifying Sony T-Con Boards

The T-Con board is responsible for controlling how image data is delivered to the screen. When this board fails, the symptoms are often visual. You may see vertical lines, distorted colors, flickering images, or a completely black screen while audio continues to play.

Sony T-Con boards can be some of the most difficult components to identify because they often do not follow a single consistent format. In many cases, they share numbering styles with other manufacturers, including formats commonly seen in LG or Samsung designs. Sometimes the number is printed clearly, and other times it is located on the back of the board or embedded in small text on the surface.

Below is an example of the two primary numbering systems for Sony T-con boards:

Because of this inconsistency, it is important to examine the board carefully and not assume that the first visible number is the correct one. If the number is unclear or missing, combining a clear image of the board with your TV model information is often the fastest way to confirm the correct replacement.

Why Accuracy Matters in Sony TV Repairs

Sony televisions frequently use multiple board variations within the same model line. This means that even if two TVs share the same model number, the internal components may differ based on production run, panel supplier, or regional configuration.

Using the wrong part can lead to a range of issues, including firmware incompatibility, missing inputs, display problems, or a complete failure to power on. In some cases, it can even cause damage to other components within the TV. Taking the time to confirm the exact part number eliminates these risks and ensures that your repair moves forward without unnecessary setbacks.

Final Thoughts on Getting the Right Part

Sony TV repair can feel more complicated than other brands, but the process becomes much easier once you understand how part identification works. By focusing on the correct numbers, using reliable references, and avoiding the temptation to rely on board numbers, you set yourself up for a successful repair from the start.

At TVpartsToday, we have built our reputation as The World's #1 Hub for DIY TV Repair by helping customers navigate challenges just like this every day. Whether you are troubleshooting a power issue, tracking down a display problem, or replacing a main board, the right part number is always the foundation of a successful DIY repair.
