You may see several circuit boards, ribbon cables, speakers, wires, and connectors without knowing what any of them actually do. Fortunately, you do not need to be an electronics engineer to understand the basic components inside a modern television.
Learning what the main board, power supply board, T Con board, LED driver, Wi Fi board, speakers, and display panel actually do can make troubleshooting much easier. More importantly, understanding which symptoms are commonly associated with each component can help you avoid replacing the wrong part.

What Are the Main Parts Inside a TV?
Although television designs vary considerably between manufacturers and models, most modern TVs rely on several major systems to create the picture, produce sound, connect to external devices, and operate Smart TV features.
The components you are most likely to encounter during a DIY TV repair include the power supply board, main board, T Con board, LED driver circuitry, display panel, speakers, and Wi Fi hardware. Some televisions have each of these functions on separate circuit boards. Others combine multiple functions onto a single board.
That distinction is important. You should never assume that your TV contains a particular board simply because you saw one inside another television. Let's look at what each component actually does.
Power Supply Board: The Foundation of the TV's Electrical System
The power supply board, sometimes called the PSU or power board, converts the electricity coming from your wall outlet into the lower DC voltages required by the television. Those voltages are then distributed to components such as the main board, T Con, audio circuitry, display system, and other internal electronics.
The power supply also plays an important role during startup and standby operation. Even when your television appears to be turned off, a small amount of standby power is typically available so the TV can respond when you press the power button on the remote. When a power supply begins failing, symptoms may include a TV that will not turn on, no standby light, clicking during startup, random shutdowns, intermittent startup, or certain black screen conditions.
If your television appears completely dead, the power supply is one of the first internal components to consider after confirming that the wall outlet, power cord, and any external power adapter are working correctly.

Main Board: The Brain of Your Television
If the power supply provides the energy your television needs, the main board provides the intelligence. The main board, sometimes called the motherboard, logic board, or system board, controls many of the television's most important functions.
HDMI inputs, USB ports, audio and video processing, menu navigation, streaming applications, firmware, Smart TV functions, and communication between internal components are typically controlled through the main board.
On a Smart TV, the main board also contains much of the computing hardware responsible for running the operating system and applications. This is why a failing main board can produce such a wide variety of symptoms.
Your television might freeze or lag. HDMI inputs may stop working. Streaming applications may crash. The TV may become stuck in a boot loop, stop responding to commands, lose Wi Fi functionality, or develop picture and sound problems. When several unrelated functions begin failing at the same time, the main board becomes an especially important component to investigate.
You can often identify the main board visually because the HDMI, USB, Ethernet, antenna, and other external connections are physically attached to it.
T Con Board: Controlling How the Picture Reaches the Screen
The T Con board, short for Timing Control board, is primarily responsible for translating video information into the precise timing signals required by the display panel. The main board processes the incoming video. That information is then sent toward the display system, where the T Con helps control how and when the pixels produce the image.
When the T Con begins failing, the symptoms are usually picture specific. You may see vertical lines, strange colors, flickering, a washed out picture, slow or abnormal image refresh, half of the screen malfunctioning, or a black screen while sound continues normally.
This distinction can be extremely useful during troubleshooting. If your TV's apps, menus, inputs, and other functions are malfunctioning, think about the main board. If the television appears to operate normally but the image itself is distorted, the T Con becomes much more relevant.
However, not every television contains a separate replaceable T Con board. Some manufacturers integrate T Con circuitry into the main board or another portion of the display system.

LED Driver: Powering the Backlight System
LED LCD televisions require illumination behind the LCD panel so you can see the picture. The LED driver regulates the voltage and current used by the LED backlights. In some televisions, the LED driver is a separate circuit board. In others, the LED driver circuitry is incorporated directly into the power supply.
Problems involving this system can produce a television that has sound but appears to have a completely black screen, a picture that briefly flashes before disappearing, flickering brightness, or uneven illumination.
One useful diagnostic method for these symptoms is the flashlight test. If you shine a flashlight closely against a dark television screen and can see a faint moving image, the television is still creating a picture but is failing to illuminate it properly. That shifts troubleshooting toward the LED driver, power supply, or backlight system.
Because accessing the actual LED strips usually requires removing the extremely fragile LCD panel, TVpartsToday does not recommend backlight strip replacement for the average DIY repairer and does not carry replacement backlight strips. Investigating the power supply and LED driver circuitry is generally a much more practical starting point.
Display Panel: The Screen Itself
The display panel is the physical screen responsible for producing the final image you see. Depending on the television, you may have an LCD based display illuminated by LEDs or a self illuminating technology such as OLED.
The important thing for a DIY repairer to understand is that the panel is fundamentally different from the replaceable circuit boards inside the TV. A failed main board, power supply, or T Con can often be replaced economically. A failed display panel usually cannot.
Panel problems can include permanent horizontal lines, persistent vertical lines that remain after appropriate board troubleshooting, internal discoloration, sections of the screen that no longer function, or physical cracks.
If the screen is physically cracked, replacing the entire television is almost always the most economical option. The same generally applies when process of elimination confirms an internal panel failure. Replacement panels are expensive, difficult to source, and extremely fragile.
TVpartsToday Tip: Do not assume the panel has failed simply because the picture looks terrible. T Con and main board failures can produce dramatic image problems that closely resemble a damaged screen. Diagnose the replaceable components before concluding that the panel itself is defective.
Speakers and TV Audio
Your television's speakers convert the audio signal into the sound you hear. When a TV has picture but no sound, it is easy to assume the speakers have failed. Sometimes that is true, but audio problems can originate elsewhere.
Begin with the basics. Check whether the television has accidentally been muted. Review the audio output settings. Disconnect soundbars, receivers, Bluetooth devices, and other external audio equipment. Test different inputs and applications.
If the problem exists everywhere, the speakers, their wiring, or the main board may be involved. Remember that the main board handles audio processing in addition to video processing, so complete audio loss does not automatically mean the speakers themselves need replacement.
Wi Fi Board: Connecting Your Smart TV to the Internet
Smart TVs require networking hardware to communicate with your wireless router. In televisions that use a separate Wi Fi board, sometimes called a WLAN or wireless module, this small circuit board handles wireless communication.
Symptoms of Wi Fi related failure can include the TV failing to detect networks, repeatedly disconnecting, displaying weak connectivity despite other devices working normally, or losing wireless functionality entirely.
However, there is an important complication. Many modern televisions integrate the Wi Fi hardware directly into the main board. If your TV uses integrated Wi Fi and the wireless hardware itself fails, replacing a separate Wi Fi module is not an option. The main board may need to be replaced instead. Always determine how your specific television is designed before ordering a Wi Fi board.
Some TVs Combine Multiple Components Onto One Board
One of the biggest mistakes beginners make is assuming every television has the same internal layout. They do not! Manufacturers constantly redesign televisions to reduce manufacturing costs, save space, and simplify assembly.
A television may have a separate power supply and main board. Another may combine multiple functions onto one PCB. The LED driver may be part of the power supply. Wi Fi may be integrated into the main board. T Con circuitry may also be integrated rather than existing as a standalone replacement board.
This is why identifying what is actually inside your television is more useful than relying on a generic diagram. Once you remove the back cover, take clear photographs before disconnecting anything. Those photos can help you identify components and provide a useful reference during reassembly.
Match Symptoms to the System That Controls Them
Learning TV components becomes much more valuable when you connect each component to the symptoms it can produce. A television with no power or no standby light naturally directs attention toward the power system.
A TV that powers on but freezes, boot loops, loses HDMI inputs, or develops widespread Smart TV problems makes the main board more relevant. Picture specific problems such as vertical lines, strange colors, half screen failures, flickering, or abnormal refresh can direct troubleshooting toward the T Con and display system.
Sound with an extremely dark screen and a faint image visible during the flashlight test shifts attention toward illumination, including the power supply and LED driver system. Wi Fi failure that occurs while the rest of the TV operates normally may involve a separate wireless module when one is present.
These symptom patterns are not absolute diagnoses. Several TV failures can create overlapping symptoms. Think of them as starting points for a process of elimination rather than guarantees that a specific board has failed.
The Most Important Rule When Buying Replacement TV Parts
Diagnosing the correct type of board is only half of a successful DIY repair.
You also need the correct replacement. One of the most important rules we teach at TVpartsToday is to match the manufacturer's exact part number whenever possible. Do not rely solely on the television model number.
Manufacturers frequently build the same TV model using different circuit board revisions during production. Two televisions with identical model numbers can contain different internal components.
You also should not assume that a number printed directly onto the green circuit board is the replacement part number. PCB markings are frequently board numbers or manufacturing references that can appear on multiple configurations.
The correct manufacturer part number is commonly found on a barcode or identification sticker, although the location and numbering format varies significantly between Samsung, LG, Sony, Vizio, Hisense, TCL, and other manufacturers. How to Decide Which TV Part to Replace
Start with the television's symptoms rather than randomly replacing boards. Confirm that the wall outlet and power cord are working. Check external devices and HDMI cables. Review relevant picture, audio, and network settings. Perform a power cycle or factory reset when appropriate.
Then determine which part of the television is actually failing:
Is it a power problem?
Is the entire Smart TV malfunctioning?
Is the problem limited to the picture?
Is the television producing sound but failing to illuminate the display?
Is wireless connectivity the only feature that has stopped working?
These questions allow you to narrow the repair toward the component responsible for that function. Process of elimination is much more reliable than purchasing several boards and hoping one solves the problem.
Can Beginners Replace TV Circuit Boards?
In most cases, yes! One of the biggest advantages of board level DIY TV repair is that you generally do not need to diagnose and replace individual capacitors, processors, or microscopic electronic components.
Many repairs involve replacing the complete circuit board. After unplugging the television and safely removing the rear cover, the process may consist primarily of disconnecting cables, removing mounting screws, installing the replacement board, and reconnecting everything exactly as it was.
The difficulty varies by television, but power supply, main board, T Con, and Wi Fi board replacement can often be approachable projects for careful beginners. Take photographs before disconnecting cables, organize your screws, never force ribbon connectors, and always prioritize electrical safety.
When DIY TV Repair Is Not the Right Choice
There are situations where replacing the television or seeking professional assistance makes more sense. If you are uncomfortable working around electronics, do not attempt an internal repair.
If the television is still under warranty, check the manufacturer's warranty terms before opening it. Repairs involving extensive panel disassembly are also considerably different from straightforward circuit board replacement.
Most importantly, if diagnosis confirms that the display panel itself has failed, replacing the television is generally more economical than replacing the screen. Knowing when not to repair something is just as valuable as knowing how to repair it.
Understanding Your TV Makes Troubleshooting Easier
You do not need to memorize every resistor, capacitor, cable, and connector inside your television to become better at DIY TV repair.
Start with the major systems. The power supply provides and regulates electricity. The main board controls processing, inputs, software, and system operation. The T Con manages critical image timing in televisions where it exists separately. The LED driver controls illumination in LED LCD TVs. The Wi Fi system handles wireless communication.
