Screen flicker is usually described as rapid changes in brightness, flashing images, or a picture that seems to pulse unexpectedly. Sometimes the entire display flickers, while other times only part of the screen is affected.

Many televisions use Pulse Width Modulation, commonly referred to as PWM, to control LED backlight brightness. This technology rapidly switches the backlights on and off at extremely high speeds. While most viewers never notice it, others are much more sensitive to the effect, especially during long viewing sessions or while gaming.

Televisions may also introduce flicker through motion enhancement features, black frame insertion, adaptive brightness controls, or refresh rate processing. These picture enhancements are designed to improve motion performance, but in some situations they make flicker more noticeable.

When adjusting picture settings does not improve the symptom, the problem often shifts from software to hardware.

Start With the Easy Fixes

Before opening your television, begin with the simplest troubleshooting steps.

Reset your picture settings to their factory defaults and disable motion enhancement features such as Motion Smoothing, Auto Motion Plus, TruMotion, MotionFlow, or similar processing depending on your television's manufacturer.

Reduce the backlight setting while leaving brightness and contrast at moderate levels. This can significantly reduce perceived flicker caused by Pulse Width Modulation.

Next, test multiple HDMI inputs using different cables and different external devices. Streaming players, gaming consoles, cable boxes, and Blu-ray players can occasionally output video formats that create flickering or unstable images.

If only one HDMI device causes the problem, the television itself may be functioning normally.

Televisions suffering from power supply problems may also exhibit random shutdowns, delayed startup, clicking sounds, or intermittent power loss alongside the flickering screen.

Inspect the power supply for swollen capacitors, burn marks, cracked solder joints, or signs of overheating if additional power related symptoms are present.

Understanding the Role of the T Con Board

The T Con board plays one of the most important roles in picture quality.

This board controls the timing and distribution of image data between the main board and the display panel. Every frame displayed on the screen passes through the T Con before reaching the LCD panel.

When the T Con board begins failing, the television may develop flickering, unstable colors, vertical lines, ghosting, image tearing, partial picture failures, or sections of the screen that flash independently from the rest of the display.

Because these symptoms directly affect image timing, replacing the T Con board often restores proper operation when diagnosis confirms it as the failed component.

Color Distortion Can Point to Multiple Problems

Color distortion appears in many different forms.

Some televisions produce overly saturated colors while others develop faded images, green or purple tinting, ghosting, inverted colors, or random flashes of incorrect colors.

The first step is always to verify picture settings. Incorrect color temperature, contrast, HDR adjustments, or dynamic picture modes can create dramatic changes in image quality.

If resetting the picture settings does not improve the image and every HDMI input displays the same symptom, the problem likely originates inside the television.

The Main Board Controls Video Processing

The main board acts as the television's central processor.

It manages HDMI inputs, streaming applications, picture processing, audio processing, Smart TV functions, and communication with the T Con board.

If the main board begins malfunctioning, image quality may deteriorate across every input source simultaneously.

Symptoms commonly include flickering colors, washed out pictures, distorted video, frozen menus, HDMI problems, intermittent picture loss, or televisions that reboot unexpectedly.

Because the main board controls virtually every processing function inside the TV, replacing it frequently restores normal operation when hardware failure has occurred.

Loose Ribbon Cables Can Mimic Major Failures

Not every internal display problem requires replacing a circuit board.

Ribbon cables and LVDS cables carry video information between the main board, T Con board, and display panel.

A cable that has partially worked loose during shipping, moving the television, or years of thermal expansion can create flickering, flashing, vertical lines, color shifts, or intermittent picture loss.

Before replacing expensive components, carefully inspect every ribbon cable for secure connections and signs of physical damage.

When LED Backlights Are Responsible

Failing LED backlights can also produce flickering, particularly if one section of the display repeatedly becomes brighter or darker than the rest of the screen.

However, replacing LED backlight strips requires nearly complete disassembly of the television, including removal of the fragile LCD panel.

Begin with picture settings, firmware updates, HDMI cables, and external devices. If the problem remains across every input, inspect ribbon cable connections before moving to the power supply board, T Con board, and main board.

Whenever replacing an internal board, always match the exact manufacturer part number printed on the barcode sticker attached to the original component.
