What Happens During a Power Surge?

A power surge is a sudden spike in electrical voltage that travels through your home's wiring. Under normal conditions, televisions receive a steady supply of electricity that internal components are designed to regulate. During a lightning strike, utility outage, or sudden restoration of power, voltage can increase dramatically for a fraction of a second.

Although brief, that surge carries enough energy to overwhelm delicate electronic components inside modern televisions. The result can range from a TV that will not turn on at all to one that powers on but develops unusual operating problems.

Smart TV features may freeze, reboot repeatedly, or disappear entirely. Some televisions may produce sound without picture, while others become stuck on the manufacturer logo during startup.

Because these symptoms overlap with other failures, diagnosing the main board requires careful elimination of other possibilities.

Start With Simple Troubleshooting

Before removing the back cover, perform several basic checks.

Begin with a complete power reset by unplugging the television from the wall outlet. Press and hold the physical power button on the TV for approximately sixty seconds to discharge any remaining electricity stored inside the power supply. Leave the television unplugged for another minute before restoring power.

If the standby light returns but the television still refuses to start properly, disconnect every external device. Remove HDMI cables, USB accessories, streaming devices, cable boxes, soundbars, and gaming consoles before attempting another startup.

Occasionally, a surge-damaged external device continues feeding faults into the television even after the original surge has ended.

If the TV operates normally with everything disconnected, reconnect each device individually until the faulty equipment is identified.

Carefully remove the rear cover and examine both the power supply board and main board.

Surge protectors also wear out over time. Even if they continue supplying power, their internal protection circuitry gradually degrades after absorbing repeated surges. Replacing older surge protectors every few years helps maintain effective protection.
