What Does Screen Flicker Look Like?
LG TV screen flicker can appear in several different ways depending on the underlying cause.
Some televisions rapidly flash between bright and dark images. Others pulse continuously, flicker only during dark scenes, or randomly change brightness while watching TV. In more severe cases, sections of the screen may flicker independently, colors may flash unexpectedly, or the entire picture may appear unstable.

Start With LG Picture Settings

As power supply components age, especially capacitors, voltage output can become unstable. Small fluctuations in voltage may cause the display to brighten and dim rapidly, resulting in noticeable screen flicker.
Power supply problems are often accompanied by additional symptoms such as delayed startup, random shutdowns, clicking noises, intermittent power loss, or difficulty turning the television on.
If several of these symptoms appear together, the power supply board should be inspected carefully.
LG OLED TVs and the Importance of the T Con Board
For many LG OLED televisions, the T Con board plays an especially important role in picture quality.
Compared to many traditional LED televisions, LG OLED models rely heavily on precise timing signals to control millions of self illuminating pixels. Because of this, T Con board failures often create dramatic display problems.
A failing T Con board may produce screen flickering, flashing, color instability, image tearing, partial screen failures, vertical lines, or sections of the display that update differently from the rest of the picture.
This is one reason T Con diagnosis is particularly important when repairing LG OLED televisions.
If settings and external devices have already been eliminated, replacing the T Con board is frequently the next logical repair.
The Main Board Controls the Entire Viewing Experience
The main board serves as the television's central processing system.
It manages HDMI inputs, webOS, streaming applications, video processing, picture enhancement, audio processing, and communication with the T Con board.
When the main board begins failing, flickering often appears across every HDMI input and every streaming application rather than affecting only one source.
Other symptoms may include frozen menus, HDMI failures, random restarting, picture distortion, Smart TV performance issues, or complete loss of video.
Replacing the main board frequently restores normal operation when diagnosis confirms it has failed.
Loose Ribbon Cables Can Produce Intermittent Flickering
Not every flickering screen requires replacing a circuit board.
Ribbon cables and LVDS cables carry image information between the main board, T Con board, and display panel.
Over years of heating and cooling, these connectors may gradually loosen or develop poor electrical contact.
The result can include intermittent flickering, flashing images, color shifts, partial display failures, or temporary picture loss.
Inspecting these connections should always be part of the troubleshooting process before replacing internal boards.
What About LED Backlights?
On standard LG LED televisions, deteriorating LED backlights may also create flickering or uneven brightness.
However, replacing LED backlight strips requires almost complete disassembly of the television and removal of the fragile LCD panel.

LG OLED televisions do not use traditional LED backlight strips, making this section applicable only to LG LED LCD models.

Panel failures often create permanent vertical lines, flashing image sections, dark bands, ghosting, or flickering that remains after replacing the T Con board and main board.
Unfortunately, replacement display panels are expensive, difficult to source, and extremely fragile during installation.
For this reason, replacing the television is usually more economical than replacing the panel.
Diagnose the Problem Methodically
Professional TV repair technicians avoid replacing random parts.
Instead, they work through the television one step at a time.
Begin by resetting picture settings and testing every HDMI device. Verify that the problem appears across multiple sources before opening the television.
Inspect ribbon cable connections before evaluating the power supply board, T Con board, and main board.
Following this process saves money while greatly improving the likelihood of identifying the true cause.
Whenever replacing a circuit board, always match the exact manufacturer part number printed on the barcode sticker attached to your original board.
Never rely solely on the TV model number because many LG televisions were manufactured using multiple board revisions.
