DIY TV Repair: Why the Part Number Reigns as King

DIY TV Repair: Why the Part Number Reigns as King

Mike Smith |

When your television stops working, one of the most important steps in a successful repair is identifying the correct replacement part. Many DIYers make the mistake of ordering based on a board number, only to discover that the part does not fit or function properly. This single misstep can delay your repair and add unnecessary frustration.

At TVpartsToday, The World's #1 Hub for DIY TV Repair, we help customers avoid this exact issue every day. The difference between a successful repair and a wasted purchase often comes down to one simple concept. Always use the correct part number, not the board number.

Understanding how to locate and verify part numbers across different brands is the key to getting your TV working again quickly and confidently.

Why Part Numbers Matter More Than Board Numbers

Television manufacturers often produce multiple variations of the same model. While these TVs may look identical on the outside, the internal components can differ based on production runs, panel suppliers, or firmware configurations.

Board numbers are used during manufacturing and are often printed directly on the circuit board. These numbers may appear correct, but they do not guarantee compatibility. Part numbers, on the other hand, are tied to the exact component designed for your specific configuration.

Ordering the wrong number can result in a board that powers on but does not function correctly, or worse, does not work at all. This is why experienced technicians and DIY repair professionals always rely on part numbers first. Remember, if you're confused, you can always call us for help at 930-212-1975! Identifying Part Numbers by Brand

Each manufacturer uses its own labeling system, which can make identification confusing if you do not know what to look for. By understanding these patterns, you can quickly locate the correct number on your board and avoid common mistakes. Below are some of the biggest TV brands, with their most common part number configurations explained:

Samsung: The Most Straightforward System

Samsung televisions are known for having clear and consistent labeling. Most part numbers are printed on a white barcode sticker attached to the board.

Main boards typically use numbers beginning with BN94 or BN96. Power supply boards often begin with BN44. T Con boards are usually labeled with BN95 or BN96.

Main Boards: Look for a white sticker with a part number beginning with BN94-#####X or BN96-######X. (Example: BN94-14159C)

Power Supply Boards: These typically begin with BN44-#####X. (Example: BN44-01170A)

T-Con Boards: Often start with BN95-#####X or BN96-#####X. (Example: BN95-00628A)

Be careful not to confuse these with board numbers like BN97-#####X. These may look similar but are not valid part numbers for ordering. Always rely on the part number sticker for accuracy.

Pictured below is an example of a Samsung main board. The part number can be found on the white QR code sticker within the red circle:

Sony: Requires Extra Attention

Sony televisions are often the most challenging when it comes to identifying part numbers. In many cases, the true part number is not printed clearly on the board itself.

Power supply boards are typically easier to identify and often use longer numeric formats. T Con boards may follow more familiar patterns, but Sony’s internal numbering system can still create confusion.

Main Boards: These often require using the number on the white sticker and matching it in our database. Formats may look like A#######A or A-####-###-A. (Example: A2229178A or A-2229-178-A)

Power Supply Boards: These are easier to spot. Look for a 9-digit number (sometimes with dashes), such as 1-010-150-11 or 101015011.

T-Con Boards: Many follow formats similar to LG and Samsung, such as 6871L-####X or LJ94-####X. However, Sony also uses internal identifiers, which can add confusion. These are best left to professionals like us, so send a picture to info@tvpartstoday.com for further assistance!

Below is an example of a Sony power supply board. The part number can be found on the white QR code sticker within the red circle:

LG: Pay Attention to Prefixes

LG boards are known for having multiple numbers that look similar, which makes it easy to select the wrong one.

Main board part numbers usually begin with EBT, EBR, or EBU. Power supply boards use the EAY prefix. T Con boards often begin with 6871L, although this prefix may sometimes need to be added manually when searching.

Numbers that begin with EAX are board numbers and should not be used when ordering replacement parts.

Main Boards: The correct identifiers usually start with EBT########. Occasionally you may see EBR or EBU prefixes as well. (Example: EBT65514304)

Power Supply Boards: Look for numbers beginning with EAY########. (Example: EAY65689335)

T-Con Boards: Usually start with 6871L-####X. Often times the “6871L” prefix is missing, so you may need to add it before searching. (Example: 6871L-1943A)

Again, PLEASE AVOID using numbers beginning with EAX! These are board numbers, not part numbers.

Below is an example of an LG T-con board. The partial part number can be found on the white square within the red circle:

Vizio: Understanding Partial Numbers

Vizio boards often display partial numbers that require a prefix to form the complete part number.

Main boards may show a number like GXICB02K039, but the full part number includes a prefix such as 756T. Power supply boards commonly begin with ADTV, while T Con boards vary widely in format.

Because of this variation, Vizio parts often require careful verification before purchasing.

Main Boards: These often display a partial number such as GXICB02K039. The full part number requires the prefix “756T,” which makes it 756TXICB02K039.

Power Supply Boards: Look for numbers beginning with ADTV (for example, ADTVN5714AAX).

T-Con Boards: These vary widely in format and style, which is why many customers reach out to us directly for confirmation. These are best left to professionals like us, so send a picture to info@tvpartstoday.com for further assistance!

HiSense: Look for the QR Code

HiSense boards can be confusing as well, since there are multiple stickers on the part, and each typically has multiple numbers. The key to these parts, in most cases, is to look for the white QR code sticker, which will have a series of numbers on it.

In the case of the power supply board, the main board, or the T-con board, you'll be looking for a six digit number.

Main Boards: These almost always have a white QR code sticker, and the first set of numbers will have the 6-digit part number followed by a backslash "/", followed by more numbers. You only need the first six digit number. This number typically starts with a 1 or a 2! (Example: 276276)

Power Supply Boards: Sometimes these have a QR code with the 6 digit part number, and sometimes they have a white barcode sticker with the 6 digit part number on it. This number typically starts with a 1, 2, or 3! (Example: 163183)

T-Con Boards: These vary widely in format and style, which is why many customers reach out to us directly for confirmation. These are best left to professionals like us, so send a picture to info@tvpartstoday.com for further assistance!

Where to Find the Correct Number

In most cases, the correct part number is located on a white barcode sticker attached to the board. Sometimes the sticker instead has a QR code and multiple lines of text. The part number is usually distinct in format and often includes a recognizable prefix based on the brand.

Avoid relying on large printed numbers directly on the board surface. These are typically manufacturing identifiers and do not guarantee compatibility.

If the label is worn or difficult to read, taking a clear photo in good lighting can help ensure accuracy when verifying the number.

Why Accuracy Saves Time and Money

Even a single incorrect digit in a part number can result in ordering the wrong component. Because many boards look nearly identical, it is easy to assume compatibility based on appearance alone.

Using the correct part number eliminates guesswork and ensures that the replacement board will function properly with your specific TV. This reduces the risk of repeated repairs, unnecessary returns, and extended downtime.

Professional technicians rely on this level of precision every day, and it is just as important for DIY repair.
