Sony Firmware Update Help

IMPORTANT: Try the replacement Sony main board in your set before attempting the firmware update; a small percentage of boards will not require the update!

Sony main boards (and sometimes T-con boards!) are a unique beast in the industry of TV repair. Unlike most other parts, which are what we call "plug and play", Sony main boards need a firmware update in order to work properly. This is because the main board, T-con, and panel need to be "synced" or paired together in order to function.

After installing the mainboard in your set, expect the television to have a blank screen. Your power indicator light may or may not be flashing an alternating green/amber, white/green, or red/white. Sometimes it may instead flash a single color, generally just white in these cases. This indicates the mainboard is functioning properly and the TV is expecting the firmware update. The firmware will be updated using a USB flash drive.

If it is your first time ordering a Sony main board from us, we provide a complimentary USB flash drive that is 4GB in size. If we are out of stock on these flash drives, they will not be provided.

YOU WILL NOT POWER ON THE TV FIRST. YOU CAN PERFORM THE FIRMWARE UPDATE EVEN IF THE TV DOES NOT APPEAR TO POWER ON.

Reminder: You will not see anything on the screen. You will not need to active or otherwise interact with the TV menus or anything of that nature.

You MUST perform the USB firmware update without an image on your television.

  • Confirm you are using the USB thumb drive that was shipped with your part; if you did not receive a thumb drive with your part, be sure you have a thumb drive that is 4GB! The firmware will not take with a larger thumb drive, and smaller thumb drives are not large enough to put the firmware on them. Most updates are around 2GB in size.

  • Find and download the latest firmware for your television on the Sony website:  https://www.sony.com/electronics/support

If after following all of the steps in the guide provided, you still have issues, please email info@tvpartstoday.com with the subject line as “SONY HELP” and our Sony tech will be happy to assist you with the update.

Failure to follow the steps in the guide may render the mainboard useless, make it appear defective, and will void the warranty we have provided on this part, leaving the order ineligible for refund or replacement.
